Greenleaf Lake is the best small lake in eastern Oklahoma that most people have never fished. Fish the aquatic vegetation edges at first light. Greenleaf has established water willow and coontail throughout the shallows — the bass use the outer weed edge as their morning ambush position. Conditions and what to know before you launch
Wind
At 920 acres, Greenleaf is small enough that the surrounding Ozark hills provide meaningful wind shelter on most exposures. The lake’s compact size limits fetch — even in south winds, chop is rarely dangerous for a sit-on-top kayak. The coves and creek arms offer additional shelter in any wind direction. Wind is a consideration on the main lake in strong weather, but it’s not the limiting factor that it is on Oklahoma’s open-prairie reservoirs. Morning launches are still preferable for bass fishing regardless of wind.
Boat Traffic
Light year-round. The single state park ramp and the remote location keep pressure significantly below comparable lakes. Water skiing is permitted in open areas, but the lake rarely sees ski traffic on weekday mornings. The marina and fishing dock generate some recreational activity near the launch on summer weekends. The best approach is to paddle away from the dock area and into the far coves and creek arms — you’ll likely have those sections to yourself.

Safety
Greenleaf is a remote lake with a single access point through Greenleaf State Park. Cell service may be limited in the surrounding hill country — let someone know your float plan and expected return before launching. The lake has no significant current hazards; the spillway dam keeps levels stable and eliminates the flood-release risk present at USACE-managed lakes. The main safety consideration is the remoteness: if something goes wrong on the water, you’re farther from help than on an OKC metro lake. Wear your PFD and carry a whistle.
Greenleaf’s clear water is a gift for wildlife viewing but requires real discipline on the bass bite. Fish can see your shadow, your line, and your kayak approach from much farther than in stained water. Greenleaf Lake has two area-specific regulations beyond statewide rules. First: channel and blue catfish are limited to six combined per day. Second: only one blue catfish over 30 inches may be kept per day. Both rules are in addition to standard ODWC statewide limits on all other species. Largemouth bass follow the statewide regulation of 6 per day with only 1 fish greater than 16 inches.
